Has anyone been reading The Book Thief?

I'm still surprised this was a young adult book. The characters, particularly Liesel, are so deep it is hard to imagine a YA appreciating the depth of her losses and compassion even under dire circumstances. Maybe it's because Hans and Rosa have shown her to be strong yet caring.
